The Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre strengthened leadership capacity and enterprise development in Nigeria’s waste management sector through its Leadership Programme for Sustainable Waste Management (LPSWM), an executive learning programme held from August 4th to September 11th. designed to strengthen business models, promote innovation and support the development of viable circular economy enterprises.
Delivered through online learning, industry engagement, case studies, group advisory sessions and experiential learning, the programme equipped participants with practical knowledge and tools to explore business opportunities within sustainable waste management. Through these learning experiences, participants examined how waste management enterprises can integrate environmental responsibility with sound business practices to strengthen operations, support business growth and create lasting value.
Oreva Atanya, who facilitated a session encouraged participants to look beyond conventional waste disposal approaches and consider how recycling, resource recovery and other circular solutions can create new business opportunities. She said, “Sustainable waste management requires us to rethink how we view waste and the value that can be created from it. By combining innovation with sound business strategy, practitioners can develop solutions that address environmental challenges while creating viable enterprises and new opportunities for growth.”
Participants also gained insights from industry practitioners and subject-matter experts on building successful waste management businesses in volatile markets, financial management and capital sourcing, human resource management, marketing and operational effectiveness. A key highlight was an experiential study visit on September 17, 2026 to the Mohinani rPET recycling facility, operated by Sonnex Packaging Nigeria Limited, in Ikorodu, Lagos. The visit provided participants with practical insight into recycling operations and the application of circular economy principles, demonstrating the role of recycling and resource recovery in promoting more sustainable approaches to materials management.
The in-person learning experience concluded at Lagos Business School on September 18 with a workshop on innovation in waste management business models titled, “Waste to Energy: The Circular Economy Journey of Geocycle in Nigeria,” facilitated by Temitope Dosumu, Head, Geocycle Nigeria, and a capstone project delivered by participants, offering them an opportunity to translate their learning into practical business solutions through group presentations.
The expert panel who judged the presentations comprised Eze Chukwudi, Head of Business Development at Quadloop; Obaloluwa Dairo, Venture and Policy Development Lead at the Circular Economy Innovation Partnership; Daniel Odedokun, Managing Director of ENDAN Circular Solutions; and Dr Sylke Jellema, PD Research Fellow at the LBS Sustainability Centre. The presentations enabled participants to explore how circularity and innovation could be incorporated into their business models while accounting for market realities, operational requirements and opportunities for growth.
Collaboration across the waste management value chain was another important focus of the programme. A stakeholder discussion titled “Meet the Stakeholders: Discussion with Leaders in Nigeria’s Waste Management Sector,” featured representatives from the Recyclers Association of Nigeria, Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance, Nigeria National Plastic Action Partnership, Lagos Waste Management Authority and E-Waste Producer Responsibility Organisation of Nigeria (EPRON).The discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration among businesses, industry associations, public institutions and producer responsibility organisations in addressing waste management challenges to strengthen the sector.
Through the Leadership Programme for Sustainable Waste Management, the Lagos Business School Sustainability Centre continues to support the development of leadership and business capabilities needed to build viable enterprises while advancing environmental sustainability and circular economy objectives.
